Why We Chose Never to Join Insurance Networks (And Why Our Patients Love It)

If You've Ever Felt Like a Number at the Dentist, You're Not Alone

If you have ever sat in a dental chair feeling less like a human being and more like a car on an assembly line, you aren't imagining things.

In the modern dental landscape, a shift has occurred. Many corporate and high-volume practices have handed the remote control of their patient care over to insurance companies. To keep up with falling insurance reimbursement rates, the only way those offices can survive is by speeding up: shorter appointments, crowded waiting rooms, and a rushed doctor who pops in for a 90-second hello.

When Dr. Aiken founded our downtown practice, he knew from day one that he wouldn't play that game.

We have never been in-network with insurance companies. Choosing absolute freedom from insurance was a foundational choice made to protect the integrity of our patient care.

Here is why we built our practice on independence—and why our patients tell us they will never go back to a traditional "in-network" office.

The "20-Minute Prophy" vs. The 60-Minute Luxury of Time

In a standard insurance-driven practice, a routine cleaning—technically called a prophylaxis—is often compressed into a frantic 20 to 30-minute window. The hygienist is forced to scale your teeth at lightning speed, polish them, and hustle you out the door so they can sit the next person down.

When you remove the constraints of insurance dictate, everything changes.

In our downtown office, your routine preventive visit is a dedicated 60-minute block of time.

  • Unhurried Care: We don't rush through your cleaning. We take the time to thoroughly and gently care for your teeth and gums using the highest-grade materials available.
  • Comprehensive Assessment: We treat oral health as a pillar of overall longevity. An unhurried appointment means we actually have time to perform comprehensive oral cancer screenings, airway assessments, and look at the systemic connection between your oral health and your cardiovascular wellness.
  • A Real Conversation: You aren’t staring at the ceiling while we whisper to an assistant. We use this time to talk, look at your digital scans together, co-diagnose, and map out long-term goals for your smile.

Single-Tasking Dentistry: You Are the Only One in the Room

Because insurance companies only pay a fraction of what it actually costs to deliver uncompromised, modern dental care, in-network dentists often have to jump between two, three, or even four treatment rooms at the same time. The doctor is constantly "checking out" another patient while you sit waiting with a mouth prop in.

We practice what we call single-tasking dentistry.

When you are in our chair, the doctor and the team are focused entirely on you. There is no running between rooms, no frantic interruptions, and no overlapping schedules. Our downtown location is designed to be a calm, quiet sanctuary for professionals who value their time and hate the chaotic energy of a crowded waiting room.

What "Out-of-Network" Actually Means for Your Wallet

Let's clear up a common misconception: Being out-of-network does not mean your insurance is useless.

We still accept and maximize your PPO dental insurance. Our team handles all the heavy lifting—submitting the claims, attaching the digital X-rays, and tracking the payouts. Most premium PPO plans will still pay their designated percentage directly to you or toward your care. The only difference? You pay the direct cost of our uncompromised service, and your insurance reimburses based on your plan. You simply choose to prioritize your health over an insurance company's restricted boundary.

We Work for You, Not a Boardroom

When a dentist signs a contract with an insurance network, they agree to let an actuary in a distant corporate office decide what materials can be used, what labs can fabricate your crowns, and how long a doctor is allowed to spend with you.

By stepping outside of that network, we answer only to one person: you.

Do you ever wonder what the dentist is thinking as he works on your teeth? In our office, Dr. Aiken is thinking: "I want this to last 40 years!"

If a crown requires a master ceramist to look natural and last for decades, we use that lab. If a patient needs an extra 15 minutes to feel completely comfortable and relaxed, we take that time. We refuse to compromise on the dentistry you deserve just to fit into a corporate insurance box.

We aren’t the right dental practice for everyone—and we are entirely okay with that. But if you are looking for a relationship-driven dental experience where you are heard, respected, and given the luxury of time, we think you’ll find our approach incredibly refreshing.
